Knox County Schools recognizes the importance of providing appropriate reading instruction for all students. During the 2006-2007 school year, Knox County Schools adopted new reading textbooks and materials in all grade levels for implementation this year. Part of this adoption includes materials for reading intervention. Language! is a reading program that is proven to help students make rapid gains in reading and writing and will be used as a reading intervention in middle and high school.
Class Motto: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance
Grading Policy:
During the semester course reading assignments will be given and graded according to the unit formatted data. A Silent Sustained Reading grade will also be given during the second period class. Each student is expected to have a book during that period to read. One point will be given each day for reading. These points will be totaled at the end of the semester for a grade.
Grades are cumulative for the semester. They are figured by points earned divided by points possible. The average for work submitted during the semester equals 80% of the final grades. The State End-of-Course Test makes up the final 20%. The Knox County System Wide Grading Scale will be used in determining grade percents. Please see the student handbook for further references.
Rules and Expectations:
1. Please plan to attend class each day because each day builds upon the day before. If you are not here, you cannot learn and it is easy to fall behind.
2. Please arrive to class on time and be prepared with the appropriate materials. Any student arriving through the door after the tardy bell has rung will be counted tardy. Please sign the tardy sheet on the front board if you are tardy. Detention will be given on the third tardy. Failure to serve a detention will result in a referral. A referral will be given on the sixth tardy.
3. Absentees; The make-up bin is in the front of the class. The missed work and any worksheets that may have been handed out the day of the absence will be placed in the daily folder. It will be your responsibility to get any missed work.
4. If you have any absence from school, you have three days to make up the work. No exceptions. Any test or quiz scheduled previously while a student was present in class will be binding. When turning in work, write the word ABSENT on top of the paper so it will not be marked late.
5. If you miss a quiz you will need to complete the Quiz/ Test Make-up form located in the Make-up bin. Please give this completed form to Mrs. Johnson.
6. Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. Therefore, the students will be expected to be prepared the following day for a reading check quiz. These quizzes will help students review and retain what they read, as well as prove that they have completed their homework. No assignments will be considered optional. If a student does not turn in an assignment at the requested time, a zero will be given for that assignment.
7. All major projects should be turned in on time. No exceptions. If the project is forgotten at home please have a parent or guardian deliver the project by the end of the day. All appeals can be made through a parent and or an administrative conference.
8. The daily journal and your notebook organization will be graded for a total of 100 points each. These grades will be taken at varying time during the semester.
9. All students will be expected to remain on task at all times.
10. All students will be expected to do his or her best at all times.

16. You may drink bottle water in class if the bottle has a twist on/off cap.
